If you have been following me for very long, you know that I often share contemporary songs in my blogs that have meaning to me. Today, I would like to share “The Lion and the Lamb” by Big Daddy Weave.* The chorus of this song has been stuck in my mind for days:

Our God is the Lion, the Lion of Judah
He’s roaring with power and fighting our battles Tweet This
And every knee will bow before Him
Our God is the Lamb, the Lamb that was slain
For the sin of the world, His blood breaks the chains
And every knee will bow before the Lion and the Lamb
Oh every knee will bow before the Lion and the Lamb

Big Daddy Weave shouts this song like an anthem. I have been doing the same. This morning, during my time with Jesus, I decided to look up the words from the song in the bible to see if they were biblical. They are! I got so much out of my study this morning, I thought I would share what I found with you. I will share the lyrics in green, and the bible verses I found in burgundy.

“The Lion And The Lamb”

He’s coming on the clouds,

Revelation 1:7: “Look, he is coming with the clouds,” and “every eye will see him. . .”

kings and kingdoms will bow down

Zephaniah 2:11: The Lord will be awesome to them . . . Distant nations will bow down to himall of them in their own lands.

And every chain will break,

Isaiah 14:24-25: The Lord Almighty has sworn, “Surely, as I have planned, so it will be, and as I have purposed, so it will happen. I will crush the Assyrian in my land; on my mountains I will trample him down. His yoke will be taken from my people, and his burden removed from their shoulders.”

as broken hearts declare His praise

Psalm 34:18: The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

Who can stop the Lord Almighty?

Isaiah 14:26-7: This is the plan determined for the whole world; this is the hand stretched out over all nations. For the Lord Almighty has purposed, and who can thwart himHis hand is stretched out, and who can turn it back?

Our God is the Lion, the Lion of Judah

Revelation 5:5: Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.”

He’s roaring with power

Hosea 11:10: They will follow the Lordhe will roar like a lionWhen he roars, his children will come trembling from the west.

and fighting our battles

2 Chronicles 32:7-8: “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged because of the king of Assyria and the vast army with him, for there is a greater power with us than with him.   With him is only the arm of flesh, but with us is the Lord our God to help us and to fight our battles.” And the people gained confidence from what Hezekiah the king of Judah said.

And every knee will bow before Him

Philippians 2:9-11: Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bowin heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Our God is the Lamb, the Lamb that was slain

Revelation 5:6: Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing at the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures and the elders.

For the sin of the world, His blood breaks the chains

Revelation 5:9: “You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased for God persons from every tribe and language and people and nation.”

And every knee will bow before the Lion and the Lamb
Oh every knee will bow before the Lion and the Lamb

So open up the gates, make way before the King of kings

Isaiah 60:11: Your gates will always stand openthey will never be shut, day or night, so that people may bring you the wealth of the nations—their kings led in triumphal procession.

Our God who comes to save is here to set the captives free

Isaiah 61:1: He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners . . .

For who can stop the Lord Almighty?

(Repeat Chorus)

Who can stop the Lord Almighty?
Who can stop the Lord Almighty?
Who can stop the Lord Almighty?

Oh who can stop the Lord Almighty?
Who can stop the Lord Almighty?
Oh who can stop the Lord Almighty?
Who can stop the Lord?(Repeat Chorus)

After I went through the bible, finding verses, I found this article by the author of the song, Leeland. In it, he describes how he wrote the song, and shares the verses he used.

What does this song have to do with domestic violence and it’s survivors? We have been disrespected and our hearts broken by our abusers. But, God is our champion. When we remember what he has done in the past, we can be confident that in the end, He will triumph over evil.

Question: Have you ever experienced God’s mighty power fighting for you? Could you please share that experience?

Dear Lord, we call upon you to stand up for those who have been abused. Give them your strength, and let them feel your intense love for them. Fight their battles, please Lord! Amen

May God bless all of you today,

Caroline

*The song was written by Leeland Mooring, Brenton Brown and Brian Johnson and was initially released by Bethel Music and Leeland as a part of its successful release, Have It All.
